Techniques for new Students to the Language Lab
Myanmar EFL students made satisfactory progress in reading, grammar, and writing. They should develop their listening and speaking skills. In 2000, 34 universities and colleges throughout the country were equipped with language labs. In addition, materials were provided to respective English by the task. Over the past 3 years, they had been making great effort of communicative language teaching in the new labs.
Native speaker voices, authentic materials and using a language lab are very excited to them coming to the labs to study English. Burma said that in her colleague has developed different techniques for communicative competence of their students. The objective of lab activities are exposing students to a range of purposeful listening experience and building students’ confidence in their own listening abilities.
The teacher explains some of these features of spoken English using sample voices on the tape: hesitations and fillers, unfinished sentences, repetition and rephrasing, incomplete sentence and grammatical errors. Every lab session begins with a song. After the song, they are introduced to the pre-listening activities. While listening to the tapes, they given different kinds of tasks to perform and listen to the tape 2 or 3 times. After listening to the tapes, students can give oral or written summaries.
Students should do listening practice outside of class once a week. English teachers at the Hinthada University believe in the value of listening practice in the language lab. Students can develop strategies to improve their listening comprehension. I think it is useful both teachers and students to use this techniques to develop listening skill.
