Today, I learnt about 4
English teaching methods like pronunciation teaching, culture teaching, English
using ICT and communicative language teaching. In each method has different
teaching process. So, it is good opportunity for me to review these methods.
First, pronunciation teaching. Teacher teaches students
about rhythms, body language, eyes contact, word and sentence stress. The
principles are to teach easy unit to difficult, students-centre,
self-confident, and etc. The content in pronunciation teaching it starts from
peak < alphabets>, stress < syllable or vowel sound>, and focus
word <emphasis word> and thought group <sentence>. Teacher can
choose the following process to teach that are: 1. Divide students into small group
2. Teacher tells to play games 3. Students read sentence and 4. Kinetics
practice. Teacher should critical teaching pronunciation because it is great
skill that effects to listening and speaking skills.
Second, culture teaching is teaching about different
culture of each country such as greeting, food, dressing, or life style. It
isn’t the main subject but teacher should interrupt culture in the content.
There are many method for teaching culture that are lecture, demonstration,
field trip, small group discussion, role play and programmed instruction.
Students can also learn culture outside the classroom. Teacher can teach
culture thought songs and dances, pictures, films, bulletin board and inviting
native speakers. It depends on teacher to design the lesson.
Third, teaching English using ICT or web based learning.
Students can learn and practice their language through ICT. Students are centre
for teaching. Using ICT in the class, it doesn't easy for teacher. So, before
teacher teaches them, teacher should assign the rules for learning. Teacher
should choose the content that they are interest. Teacher is only facilitor.
ICT help students both inside and outside the classroom. They can use ICT in
anytime, anywhere, and anyone.
Finally, communicative language teaching or CLT. This
method is based partly in the theories of British functional linguists. Theory
of language is used for carrying out meaningful tasks promote learning language
that is meaningful to the students promote learning. Teacher facilitates the
communication in the classroom like an adviser Students are communicator. They
can use mother tongue. Teacher should have a variety of activities like
scrambled sentences, language games, story role play. Communicative uses almost
any activity that engaged students in authentic communication. Students will be
more motivated by learning to communicate.
For 3 weeks, I have learnt about English teaching
methods. I know that it is very important for teacher to write the lesson plan
or teach. In the classroom teacher said that all English teaching methods that
he reviewed is essential for you to study in this course. If you don’t
understand about these clearly, it is hard for you to study.
